Rezvi Sheriff

Founder of Arora Hospital

Rezvi Sheriff (MBBS, MD, FRCP, FRACP, FRCPE, FCCP, FNASSL, FSLCGP) is widely recognized as the Father of Nephrology in Sri Lanka. Born on 4 November 1948, he has dedicated his life to advancing kidney care, medical education, and healthcare services in the country.

Nephrology is the medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, including dialysis and kidney transplantation.

Pioneer of Nephrology and Transplantation

Professor Rezvi Sheriff played a pioneering role in introducing renal disease diagnosis, dialysis treatment, and kidney transplantation to Sri Lanka.

He was instrumental in performing the first kidney transplant in the country in October 1985 and has since been involved in over 1000 successful kidney transplant procedures, helping patients from around the world.

His work laid the foundation for the development of modern nephrology services in Sri Lanka.

Eminent Researcher, Mentor and Educator

Over several decades, Professor Sheriff has trained generations of medical professionals in nephrology and internal medicine.

He served as:

  • Senior Professor of Medicine
  • Head of the Department of Clinical Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo
  • Senior Professor of Medicine at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University

After more than 50 years of service, he retired from the University service in December 2024. Many of the nephrologists practicing in Sri Lanka today have received training under his mentorship.

He continues to contribute to medical education as a patron of Western Institute for Professional Development.

Advancing Nephrology in Sri Lanka

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to science and medicine, Professor Rezvi Sheriff was awarded the prestigious national honour Vidyajyothi.

He has also led several initiatives to improve kidney care in Sri Lanka, including the establishment of the National Institute of Nephrology Dialysis and Transplantation, where he served as the Founder Consultant Nephrologist.

Through these initiatives, Professor Sheriff has helped expand access to advanced kidney disease treatment and transplantation services across the country.

Founder Chairman of Arora Hospital

In 1984, Prof Rezvi Sheriff established his own private hospital on Cotta Road to address the growing problem of kidney related diseases and the need for dialysis and kidney transplantation in Sri Lanka. This was the beginning of Arora Hospital’s journey, and we have grown from strength to strength over the years under Prof Rezvi Sheriff.
